How to get more Google reviews without breaking the rules

Most happy clients never leave a review unless someone asks. The businesses with steady reviews usually have a simple habit of asking at the right moment and making it easy.

Ask when the client is happiest

The best moment is right after a good visit: the new color, the finished treatment, the freshly groomed dog. A message the same day, while the result is fresh, works better than one a week later.

Send a direct link

Every extra step loses people. Send a direct link to your Google review page, so the client lands on the review box instead of searching for you. You can get the link from your Google Business Profile.

Make the ask personal and short

A one- or two-sentence message from you, with their name, gets more replies than a generic request. Say thanks for coming in, and that a review helps other people find you.

Do not break Google's rules

It is fine to ask every client the same way and to thank people who respond. If a client mentions a problem in reply, handle it directly and kindly.

  • Do not pay for reviews or offer discounts or gifts in exchange for them. Google does not allow incentivized reviews.
  • Do not ask only happy clients and filter out unhappy ones. This is called review gating, and it is against Google's policies.
  • Do not write reviews for your own business, or ask friends and family to post reviews that are not based on a real visit.

Make it a routine, not a campaign

A burst of reviews followed by silence looks less natural than a steady trickle. Build the ask into the end of each visit, so a few new reviews arrive every week without extra effort.

Where automation fits

Sending a thank-you with a review link after each appointment is exactly the kind of repeated, well-timed task that a tool can do. You decide who gets asked and the wording. Ascension builds the follow-up and, by default, shows it to you before it goes out.
